Attack on Titan
(A terribly cute comic from tumblr)
I have made an entire post on this wonderfully sad anime. It's basically about a world where humans have built these gigantic walls to protect themselves from these humanoid-things called titans. But then one day, the titans break through the walls. There are tons of twists and turns like (spoilers!) ANNIE AND EREN HAVING THE CAPABILITY TO BE A TITAN AND ANNIE BEING A HUGE DOUCHCANOE, and plenty of gruesome deaths, so you'll never really be bored with the anime. If you do end up being sad because of the show, just go on tumblr and you can find some funny posts from the fandom to make it all better (BETTAH BETTAH BETTAH BETTAH BETTAH YAAAAAAHHH [Hey Jude reference sorry]).
Magi
This anime comes in two series, but I decided to just combine them both because I'm both lazy and it just makes sense to.This anime is all about this boy named Aladdin who turns out to be a Magi, a "Magician that shapes the world". In the first series, he isn't really sure about his past, but because he is accompanied by the Djinn (These super powerful god-like beings) Ugo, he is not so sad. He meets a man names Alibaba Saluja, and the two strike a friendship. Together, they conquer a dungeon. The dungeons are these huge towers that are filled with horrors and controlled by the Djinn living there. If a human manages to get to the center of the dungeon without dying, he or she gains the power of the Djinn living there. The entire anime revolves around the adventures all of Aladdin's friends have, sometimes separate, and sometimes together. It's all quite wonderful.

I don't think I can talk about this anime without going into a frenzy about MAKOTO'S AMAZING ABS AAAGGAGAGAAGAGA, but you really should watch this anime. They isn't much of a plot, and it was kinda cliche, but the ABS MAKE IT WORTH IT!

Dangan Ronpa
Nagi no Asakura
Galilei Donna
(Mind you, I am just recommending anime that I watched and really liked. I'm sure there were plenty of other great animes from the year)
